Silence detection for multimedia communication
نویسندگان
چکیده
Silence detection and removal is an essential building block of any multimedia video conferenc-ing system. It reduces the bandwidth requirements of the underlying network transport service and helps to maintain an acceptable end-to-end delay for audio. We analyze the requirements for a silence detection algorithm hosted on a multimedia communication system, and propose a novel low complexity algorithm operating in the non-linear-law domain. After discussing the constraints which are imposed by the architecture of the system hardware (computer, packet-based network), we show that several recently proposed silence detection algorithms fail to meet all of these constraints. A new approach is then introduced, based on the small-and large-signal behavior of the speech waveform in the-law domain. The new algorithm is compared with a recent design that meets several of our requirements; experimental results indicate that it performs signiicantly better in the particular environment at hand.

Gendered Communication in Iranian University Classrooms: The Relationship between Politeness and Silence in Persian Culture
This study examined naturally-occurring university classroom interactions at Iranian universities and provided an analysis of silence patterns as politeness strategies used by male and female students. Since empirical studies of silence in classroom settings are scarce, this paper aimed to explain such phenomena using participant interviews, classroom observation and detailed discourse analysis...
متن کاملA Voice Activity Detection Algorithm for Wireless Communication Systems with Dynamically Varying Background Noise
Speech can be modeled as short bursts of vocal energy separated by silence gaps. During typical conversation, talkspurts comprise only 40% of each party’s speech and remaining 60% is silence. Communication systems can achieve spectral gain by disconnecting the users from the spectral resource during silence periods. This letter develops a simple and efficient Voice Activity Detection (VAD) algo...

This comment argues that instead of worrying about the pros and cons of whistleblowing one should focus on the more general problem of the failure of upward communication around safety and quality problems and consider what leaders and managers must do to stimulate subordinates to communicate and reward such communication. The article analyzes why safety failures occur and introduces the concep...
